Starting and running a business is a challenging endeavor, especially for people of color who often face additional hurdles. In celebration of Black History Month, the Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce recently recognized African American entrepreneurs at a reception and networking event held at 1117 Studio, owned by Stephanie Prosser. This creative hub, located at 1117 Walnut, not only houses nine resident artists but also serves as a versatile event venue.

Dee Moore, President of the Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that the event not only highlighted the studio but also provided a platform for the public to engage with these entrepreneurs, who showcased a diverse range of skills and interests.

Among the entrepreneurs honored was Kneikha “Lady K” Shanahan, the creative mind behind Art Is Love, specializing in Entertainment Décor. Starting with party planning, she discovered a niche in crafting unique decorations, from traditional flower arrangements to personalized footballs and decorated crocs. One of her popular creations is balloon boxes for baby showers, all aimed at bringing joy to people's lives through creative design.

Another entrepreneur making a difference is U’Leasa Webb, the owner of Styles by Leasa. Recognizing the importance of style in women's self-esteem, she offers personal shopper services and helps coordinate wardrobes with accessories, particularly assisting women with job interview preparation and collaborating with local employment programs. She particularly enjoys helping people prepare for job interviews and would enjoy consulting with employment programs in the area such as FaithWorks and Christian Women’s Job Corp.

Parade Deck's CEO, Riccoh Player, attended the event as a guest. With his background as a retired Marine Corps Colonel, Player understands the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life. Parade Deck, under his leadership, provides a wealth of resources for veterans, including articles on crucial topics like physical and mental health, career guidance, and available resources. It serves as an invaluable networking tool, allowing veterans to support each other while receiving helpful content and mentorship from businesses.

Since Player took on the role of CEO in August 2023, Parade Deck has achieved remarkable growth. The community of content creators has expanded by nearly 700,000, with 160 new articles and 60 additional podcasters contributing to the platform. This growth translates into more resources and support for veterans. Additionally, 25 new mentors have joined Parade Deck, enhancing the platform's ability to assist veterans further. Moreover, a directory of veteran-owned businesses has been established, featuring 23 new listings.

In addition to internal growth, Player has successfully expanded Parade Deck's networking efforts with other groups. He has signed a partnership with Stars and Stripes and established content collaboration with the Library of Congress. As a Wreaths Across America Ambassador, Player has traveled extensively, from Bangor, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery, honoring fallen veterans. Furthermore, he has forged a partnership with 12 Million Plus, a network for military spouses.

Congratulations to Riccoh Player and all the new entrepreneurs recognized at the event for their skills, dedication, and vision.
