For many veterans, mobility is more than just the ability to move—it's the key to independence, dignity, and social connection. Whether due to injuries, aging, or health conditions, immobility can make even simple tasks like visiting a coffee shop, going to the grocery store, or meeting with friends feel impossible.
One Navy veteran, Kenny Jerry, better known as Patriotic Kenny, is on a mission to change that. Through his nonprofit, the Patriotic Kenny Foundation, he is providing solutions for veterans who need assistance, ensuring they don’t suffer from isolation or lack of independence.
In this episode of the VetSOS Podcast, we had the honor of speaking with Kenny about his military service, personal struggles, and his life-changing mission to help fellow veterans regain their freedom of movement.
A Veteran’s Journey: From the U.S. Navy to a Mission of Giving
Kenny Jary (Patriotic Kenny)
Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Kenny spent his early years working in construction before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1959. He served aboard the USS Okinawa, a helicopter carrier active during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His role? Refueling helicopters and supporting military operations in the Caribbean.
When his service ended in 1965, he found himself facing an uncertain transition into civilian life. Unlike today, there were no transition programs or veteran support systems to help him adjust. With no guidance, he returned home and re-entered the construction industry before finding long-term stability at Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 32 years before retiring.
Years later, however, a new challenge emerged—his mobility began to decline.
Immobility: A Silent Struggle for Veterans
For veterans like Kenny, losing freedom of movement can feel like losing freedom. After decades of independence, he suddenly found himself unable to move freely, relying on a scooter to maintain his active lifestyle.
His scooter allowed him to visit Veterans Park, coffee shops, and social gatherings, but when it broke down, his entire world changed. Suddenly, he was confined to his home, struggling with isolation and a loss of purpose.
For many veterans, limited mobility can lead to mental health challenges, depression, and withdrawal from society. Without reliable transportation, even essential tasks like getting groceries or attending doctor’s appointments become overwhelming obstacles.
How a Viral TikTok Moment Restored Kenny’s Mobility
Kenny’s life changed dramatically when Amanda, a local schoolteacher who had befriended him, noticed his absence from their usual coffee shop. Worried, she and her friend Jenny visited him, only to discover that his scooter had broken down.
Realizing how much the ability to freely move meant to him, Amanda took action. She launched a GoFundMe campaign and shared Kenny’s story on TikTok, hoping to raise enough money to buy him a new scooter.
Then, something incredible happened—the story went viral.
Within days, thousands of people from all over the world donated generously, not only funding a brand-new scooter for Kenny but raising enough money to help other veterans in need.
This moment was a turning point for Kenny. Instead of just accepting the gift, he saw an opportunity to give back. With the overwhelming support he received, he decided to start a movement—a mission to restore mobility for veterans across the country.
The Birth of the Patriotic Kenny Foundation
Inspired by the kindness of strangers, Kenny established the Patriotic Kenny Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing mobility solutions for veterans in need.
The foundation has already donated over 140 scooters in just one year, transforming the lives of veterans who, like Kenny, faced immobility and isolation.
Why Freedom of Movement Matters for Veterans
For many veterans, having the ability to freely move is about more than just transportation. It’s about regaining independence and improving their overall quality of life. Here’s why support is crucial:
Restoring Independence – With a scooter, veterans can go shopping, visit family, attend community events, and live life on their own terms.
Reducing Isolation – Immobility often leads to social withdrawal, contributing to loneliness and depression. Scooters allow veterans to stay connected.
Supporting Physical & Mental Health – Being able to move freely improves both physical and mental well-being, encouraging veterans to stay active and engaged.
Filling the Gap in VA Support – Not all veterans qualify for scooters through the VA, leaving many without options. The Patriotic Kenny Foundation helps bridge this gap.
Community Involvement & Fundraising Events
To continue providing assistance for veterans, the Patriotic Kenny Foundation hosts a variety of community events and fundraisers.
Annual 5K Walk/Scoot/Run
The foundation organizes an annual 5K event, allowing participants to walk, scoot, or run in support of providing scooters for veterans. It’s a fun and engaging way to raise awareness and support the cause.
School Penny Drives
Recently, a local elementary school hosted a penny drive, raising over $1,100 to help fund a new scooter. Seeing young students participate in helping veterans was an emotional and inspiring experience for Kenny.
Parades & Veteran Celebrations
The foundation takes part in veteran-focused parades and events, helping spread awareness about the importance of this issue for veterans.
