Veteran Transition Support: How Operation Headshot Helps Vets and Spouses Reclaim Purpose and Identity

Transitioning out of the military is more than a career change—it’s a life transformation. For many veterans and military spouses, the shift from structured service life to an open-ended civilian world can be overwhelming, disorienting, and emotionally draining. That’s where strong, relevant, and authentic veteran transition support becomes vital.

On a recent episode of the VET S.O.S. Podcast, we spoke with Matt Watkins, a Marine Corps veteran and founder of Operation Headshot, a nonprofit helping veterans and spouses navigate the emotional and professional challenges of life after service. His personal journey and the mission of his organization are powerful examples of what meaningful veteran transition support should look like.

A Marine’s Journey: From Service to Self-Discovery

Matt Watkins

Matt Watkins served 17 years in the United States Marine Corps, developing leadership, adaptability, and perseverance. But despite a fulfilling military career, in 2021, Matt made the difficult decision to step away from active duty and transition to the Marine Reserves.

His reason? Family. During a deployment in 2018, Matt was away from his wife and two young children—one of them just two months old. The emotional impact on his family, particularly his then two-year-old son, led him to reconsider what another decade or more of military life would mean.

This is where the importance of veteran transition support begins—not when a service member leaves the military, but when they start asking, “What comes next?”

SkillBridge & the Reality of Civilian Employment

Matt transitioned through the DoD SkillBridge Program, which allows service members to intern with civilian companies during their final months on active duty while still receiving military pay. He secured an internship with an executive search firm in Nashville and began what he thought would be a smooth career transition.

But reality hit hard.

Despite expectations of a $90,000 salary, he was offered just $48,000. “My stomach sank,” he said. “I realized I wasn’t going to be able to pay my bills.”

Matt’s experience is not unique. Many veterans enter the civilian workforce unprepared for compensation differences, cultural gaps, and ambiguous expectations. Without proper veteran transition support, this can lead to deep discouragement—and in Matt’s case, depression.

The Birth of Operation Headshot: Veteran Transition Support in Action

Matt described his post-military period as the darkest of his life. “It felt like being in a pitch-black room. You can yell, scream, run in any direction, but you’re not heard and can’t see your own hands.”

What changed things? A conversation with his wife.

She had recently picked up photography and asked, “What can we do to help other veterans avoid what you're going through?” That conversation sparked the creation of Operation Headshot, a nonprofit dedicated to providing free professional headshots, networking events, and photography training to veterans and military spouses.

This is veteran transition support at its best—peer-led, purposeful, and personalized.

Why Headshots Matter More Than You Think

On the surface, offering free headshots might sound like a small gesture. But in today’s job market, personal branding is everything. A professional headshot helps veterans present themselves confidently on LinkedIn, job applications, and social platforms.

More importantly, it’s a symbolic fresh start—a way to see oneself outside of the uniform and begin building a civilian identity.

Operation Headshot now hosts quarterly networking events where these headshots are provided, along with opportunities to connect with recruiters, hiring managers, and fellow veterans.

Photography as a Tool for Healing and Career Growth

One of Operation Headshot’s standout offerings is its Photography Masterclass, a six-month online course that teaches veterans and spouses not just how to take photos, but how to turn photography into a potential career.

The course includes:

  • Choosing the right equipment

  • Lighting and composition

  • Editing and software use

  • Branding and SEO

  • Business startup skills

The curriculum is valued at $2,500, yet offered completely free as part of their veteran transition support mission. Participants also receive a one-year mentorship, which provides long-term encouragement, peer guidance, and help navigating the path from passion to profession.

In 2024, five students completed the course. In 2025, Operation Headshot welcomed 30 students from across the country—proof that the demand for creative and meaningful transition programs is growing.

Supporting Military Spouses: The Other Side of Transition

An often-overlooked aspect of veteran transition support is the role of the military spouse. Matt’s wife, who had been with him since he joined the Marines, revealed after the organization’s first fundraiser that she too was struggling with her identity post-service.

Military spouses often sacrifice their own careers, independence, and goals to support service members. When that military chapter ends, they too face a loss of structure and community.

Operation Headshot now fully includes military spouses in all of its offerings. This shift reflects an understanding that transition is a family affair, and effective support must extend beyond just the veteran.

Veteran Entrepreneurship and the Search for Purpose

Matt joked that veterans often start one of four things after service: a nonprofit, a coffee shop, a t-shirt business, or a podcast. But there’s a reason behind the stereotype.

“When we leave the military, we lose community, identity, and purpose,” he said. “Those businesses help us get them back.”

  • Coffee creates connection.

  • Podcasts allow storytelling and belonging.

  • Nonprofits restore purpose through service.

Operation Headshot, though nonprofit, also helps foster veteran entrepreneurship. For those seeking side income, therapeutic hobbies, or full-fledged careers in photography, the program offers tools to explore those paths.

Lessons from the Corps: Transferring Military Skills

One unexpected skill Matt credits for his success is his time on recruiting duty—a notoriously tough assignment in the Marine Corps. There, he learned networking, leadership, public speaking, and active listening—or as the Marines say, “listening with purpose.”

These skills now drive the way he manages his team, connects with supporters, and mentors veterans.

Another major takeaway is that success isn't only about money. While Matt once thought a six-figure salary was the goal, he now values flexibility, family time, and meaningful work far more.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Mission

Matt hinted at exciting plans to expand the organization. With 30 students this year, he wants to ensure that graduates who want to work in photography have a clear employment path—potentially by building a for-profit business that hires them directly.

This kind of forward thinking turns veteran transition support from a one-time service into a sustainable ecosystem of opportunity.

Final Thoughts: What True Veteran Transition Support Looks Like

Matt Watkins’ journey reflects the highs and lows of military transition. Through Operation Headshot, he turned his lowest point into a launchpad—not just for himself, but for hundreds of others.

His message is clear: Veteran transition support isn’t about handing someone a job—it’s about helping them rediscover who they are, connect with others, and build something meaningful.

If you're a veteran or military spouse struggling with the next step, you’re not alone—and there are people and programs, like Operation Headshot, ready to lift you up.
